Interior lighting is a different discipline than exterior, but both demand the same electrical fundamentals: correctly sized circuits, proper grounding, and fixtures matched to the load they're feeding. On the interior side, that means recessed light installation, pendant and chandelier wiring, under-cabinet LED strips, and ambient layering that works with your existing panel capacity. Exterior work covers floodlights, pathway lighting, soffit-mounted fixtures, garage lighting, and motion-activated security lighting systems wired on dedicated or shared circuits depending on load. Scope and complexity drive cost more than anything else, a single exterior fixture swap runs far less than a whole-home lighting redesign with new circuits. New can installations in existing ceilings, including blown-in insulation and tight joist bays that most contractors avoid. We use IC-rated housings where code requires and seal every penetration.

    Run the Wire, Mount the Fixture

    We route cable or conduit through the finished space with minimal drywall impact, land connections at properly sized junction boxes, and mount each fixture to manufacturer spec and code.

    Test and Walk You Through It

    Every circuit gets tested before we close anything up. We verify GFCI protection on outdoor runs, confirm dimmer compatibility, and show you how each zone operates before we leave.

Why Lighting Installs Go Wrong

    Wrong Box for the Load

    A standard plastic box isn't rated for a heavy chandelier. A fan-rated box is required for anything that moves. We match the box to the fixture every time, not to what was already in the ceiling.

    Undersized or Overloaded Circuits

    Adding six recessed cans to a circuit already running a kitchen or bathroom trips breakers and creates a fire risk. We calculate the load before we connect anything to an existing circuit.

    Exterior Connections Without Weatherproofing

Lighting Installation: What Homeowners Ask

Do security lighting systems require a dedicated circuit?
Not always, but it depends on the total load. A single motion floodlight drawing 150 watts can share a 15-amp circuit with other exterior outlets as long as the combined load stays under 80% of circuit capacity. A multi-fixture security lighting system covering a full property perimeter usually warrants its own 20-amp circuit to prevent nuisance tripping and ensure the fixtures perform at rated output. We calculate this before we pull any wire.
Can you add recessed lights to a ceiling that already has insulation?
Yes, but the housing matters. Fixtures installed in insulated ceilings must carry an IC (insulation contact) rating, standard non-IC housings create a fire risk when covered. In older homes, the existing wiring gauge and junction box type also need to be confirmed before adding cans to an existing circuit. We check both before we cut a single hole.
What's the difference between low-voltage and line-voltage exterior lighting?
Low-voltage systems (typically 12V) are common for landscape and pathway lighting. They're easier to install and safer to handle but require a transformer and are limited in brightness. Line-voltage fixtures (120V) power floodlights, security lighting, and soffit-mounted fixtures. The two systems don't mix on the same circuit. Knowing which you need depends on the application. We'll tell you which one is appropriate before we quote the job.
Do outdoor lighting installations require a permit?
New circuits always require a permit in Colorado. Swapping a fixture on an existing circuit typically doesn't. Any work that involves running new wire from the panel to an exterior location, or adding a sub-panel for a landscape lighting transformer, is a permitted job. We pull permits when they're required and schedule the inspection. Work we do is inspected and closed out. We don't leave you with open permits.
Will you connect lighting to my existing electrical outlets?
Exterior lighting should not be wired off an outlet circuit if it's a permanent, hardwired fixture. That's a code violation in most jurisdictions. Outlets and lighting are governed by different circuit requirements under the NEC. How do motion sensor floodlights get wired?
Motion-activated floodlights wire the same way as standard hardwired fixtures, with one addition: the sensor requires a neutral wire at the fixture location. Older homes with switch-loop wiring (no neutral at the box) sometimes can't support motion sensors without running new cable. We assess the existing rough-in before confirming fixture compatibility, so you're not paying for a fixture that won't work with your current wiring.
Do outdoor lighting installations require a permit in Colorado?
New circuits always require a permit in Colorado. Swapping a fixture on an existing circuit typically doesn't. Any work involving new wire from the panel to an exterior location, or adding a sub-panel for a landscape lighting transformer, is a permitted job. We pull permits when required and schedule the inspection. Work we do gets inspected and closed out. We don't leave open permits behind.
Can interior and exterior lighting share the same circuit?
Code permits it in some configurations, but it's generally not recommended for security or exterior accent lighting. Interior loads fluctuate throughout the day and can reduce available capacity for exterior fixtures when you need them most. For security lighting systems specifically, a dedicated circuit provides consistent performance and makes it easier to isolate the circuit if a fault occurs outdoors. We assess what you have and recommend the cleanest solution.
