How do I know if my electrical problem is a wiring fault or just a bad outlet?
A bad outlet is usually isolated, other outlets on the same circuit still work, and flipping the GFCI or the breaker brings it back. A wiring fault tends to affect multiple outlets downstream, or causes the breaker to trip again shortly after you reset it. If resetting didn't fix it, the problem is further upstream. That's when you call a licensed electrician rather than swap the outlet yourself.
Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping even after I reset it?
Repeated tripping on the same circuit usually means one of three things: the circuit is overloaded and can't handle the load you're putting on it, there's a short somewhere in the wiring, or the breaker itself is failing. Is exposed or damaged wiring an immediate fire hazard?
Yes, depending on where it is and how it's damaged. Wiring with cracked or missing insulation can arc against framing or insulation, and that's how electrical fires start inside walls with no visible warning. Exposed wiring from a renovation, rodent damage, or an old DIY job should be assessed by a licensed electrician before you assume it's okay. Can you repair aluminum wiring in an older home?
Yes. Aluminum branch-circuit wiring, common in homes built between the 1960s and mid-1970s, isn't automatically unsafe, but the connections fail differently than copper and need specific attention. We use CO/ALR-rated devices and anti-oxidant compound on aluminum connections. Whether you need repairs, pigtailing, or full replacement depends on the current condition. What does a whole-home electrical troubleshooting visit typically involve?
